In the 2005-06 legislative
session the Hospital Police had a chance gain firearms through
assembly bill 1289, authored by Assemblyman Jerome Horton. For the
first time ever, a legislative public safety committee voted 6-0 to
give HPO’s firearms for use while performing patrol duty and to give
them access to firearms in the instance of emergencies. What was
the result?
AB 1289 died in the Assembly
Appropriations committee in January 2006. The Committee, chaired by
Assemblywoman Judy Chu, refused to even bring the bill up for a vote
because of the cost. What did CAUSE / CSLEA do?
CAUSE / CSLEA gave Judy Chu at
least $11,200 in a 9-month period, right after she killed your gun
bill, according to the Secretary of State. You’d never know it,
because CAUSE / CSLEA doesn’t publish their vote records, meeting
minutes or PAC expenses, which every member in the union should be
able to see.

Is that the kind of union HPO’s
want protecting their interests and spending their dues money? Is
that how the political geniuses at CAUSE / CSLEA send a message to
legislators who oppose giving cops the safety equipment they need to
do their jobs, so they can make it home to their families at the end
of the day?
CAUSE / CSLEA touts having a
“97-percent winning percentage” when it comes to endorsing political
candidates - that doesn’t mean jack, if it comes at the expense of
endorsing politicians who hurt their members. Political strength
doesn’t come from reading poles and putting your finger into the air
to see which way the wind blows; political strength comes from
supporting your friends and opposing those who don’t support you.
Nobody takes CAUSE / CSLEA seriously, because they don’t support
their friends and they reward the people who hurt their employees.
Is anything more important than
protecting the lives of state peace officers? We guess at CAUSE /
CSLEA it is – maybe it’s because Judy Chu voted help the Non-sworn
save their Safety Retirement when Senator Tom McClintock tried to
get rid of it in 2004.
With CAUSE / CSLEA on your side,
it’s no wonder that HPO’s are the worst paid peace officers in the
state – look at what some of them earn for doing similar peace
officer jobs.
